Tyrael's Boons could make your first big decision in Diablo 4 Season 16 a costly one. The PTR gives you up to 132 points, but that won't cover every option across the four paths. You'll have to choose which rewards matter to your character, whether you're hunting D4 items or trying to build a supply of upgrade materials. Think ahead, too: removing a single point currently costs 5,000,000 gold.
A Seasonal System for Everyone
The new War Plans tree is part of the 3.3.0 public test, scheduled for October 27 through November 3, 2026. Every seasonal character can use it without owning the Lord of Hatred expansion. It also sits alongside Seasonal Blessings rather than replacing them. Blessings provide five fixed bonuses, while Boons let you make choices about the rewards and activities you value. The catch is the point limit: the PTR allocation allows up to four of six selections, so there's no easy way to collect everything.
Choosing a Path
Each path serves a different stage of play. Here's how they compare: Path | Main appeal | Best fit Curious Addition | Purveyor item options | Players spending Obols Merchant of Mystery | Caches for Forgotten Souls | Torment farming Scent of Gold | Gold, experience and materials | Early progression Trash for Treasure | Upgrade materials and Greater Temper | Endgame gear Scent of Gold looks useful when you're starting fresh and need levels and cash. Curious Addition can help later, although its Ancestral-focused option makes purchases more expensive. Merchant of Mystery opens a Torment merchant, with choices involving Runes, Gems and Ancestral Caches.
The Cost of Better Gear
Trash for Treasure is worth a close look once you're working on equipment you intend to keep. It can reduce Alchemist transmuting costs and improve access to materials such as Obducite and Scrolls of Restoration. Its Greater Temper recipe upgrades a Tempered Affix to a Greater Affix, using 30 Scrolls of Restoration and 1,000 Obducite each time. That's a substantial investment, so don't assume you'll be using it on every item you find. Pick your targets with care.
Plan Before You Spend
A sensible route is to start with Scent of Gold, then consider Trash for Treasure as your gear improves. Save Curious Addition or Merchant of Mystery for the activities you actually enjoy running. If you play with friends, compare your plans, but check which bonuses apply to each player before relying on shared benefits. Players searching for D4 items cheap will still want a plan for materials and gold earned during the season. PTR values can change, so check the launch notes before committing your points.
