    Description

There's a moment in a high-tier map when the screen fills, your flasks are thin, and one missed cast means a long walk back. ED Contagion Lich avoids that nonsense by letting you tag the front pack, move, and watch the infection carry through the room. Early upgrades can still sting, especially when Path of Exile 2 Currency helps close a bad resistance gap before maps start punishing you. It's a real starter that doesn't feel disposable later.

    Start With the Useful Stats

During the campaign, don't chase every shiny chaos modifier. Get Essence Drain and Contagion online, then build a character that can stand still long enough to cast them. Life and energy shield both matter here. Lich gets more from that mixed pool than a glass cannon setup does.

Take chaos damage, maximum life, and energy shield passives before chasing smaller damage clusters.
Cap elemental resistances when entering maps, then replace weak pieces one slot at a time.
Use minions as body blockers and extra pressure, not as the sole source of your damage.
Pick Lich passives that improve curse duration and minion interaction once your core defenses are in place.

    Where Most Lich Runs Collapse

On paper, the plan is simple: cast Contagion, land Essence Drain, and let one dead target spread the work. Plenty of players treat that as permission to ignore positioning. Then they cast into a sparse edge pack, run into the middle, and eat every projectile while waiting for the spread.

Play it in the other order. Find the densest cluster, place Contagion where the first death will touch the most bodies, then apply Essence Drain to a target that won't fall over before the effect matters. Keep your minions between you and the next doorway. Against tougher rares or bosses, curses aren't decoration - apply them before committing to repeated Drain casts. That extra duration from Lich nodes gives you room to move instead of face-tanking a bad overlap.

    Maps Need a Different Pace

Fast mapping and boss damage ask for different gear decisions. For clearing, skill levels and chaos damage multipliers make the spread feel alive. For hard encounters, life, energy shield, and resistances stop the build from folding when no pack is available to fuel Contagion. Fair enough - one item rarely does both jobs.

Verisium runecrafting is a sensible place to shape high-end chaos modifiers once the basic defenses are settled. In Return of the Ancients, the 0.5.4d hotfix also made Expedition farming feel steadier. Run it when you want repeatable loot from dense encounters; don't force it if your current gear still fails ordinary map pressure.

Three Checks Before You Push Higher

People keep asking if this setup can begin a league and still reach pinnacle content. Yes, provided you don't skip its boring foundations. First, secure capped resistances and a healthy life/ES pool. Second, raise chaos skill levels. Third, spend POE 2 Divine Orbs only after you know which slot is actually holding the character back. Then take the build into the next map tier and let the packs prove it.
